Discover more about BUNK'ART 1

BUNK'ART 1 is a unique museum experience located on the outskirts of Tirana, Albania. Housed within a massive five-story underground bunker that spans over 3,000 square meters and contains 106 rooms, it was originally constructed between 1972 and 1978 as a shelter for Enver Hoxha and the political elite in case of nuclear attack. The bunker remained a state secret for decades, and it is thought that Hoxha never actually used his bedroom in the bunker. In 2014, the bunker was transformed into a museum and art center by two journalists and is run by the NGO “Quendra Ura” with government support. BUNK'ART 1 aims to educate the public about Albania's history and the impact of its communist past. Visitors can explore the maze-like passageways, chambers, and tunnels, and discover historical objects, records, images, and multimedia displays that illuminate Albania's turbulent past. The museum showcases exhibits that cover the Italian invasion in 1939, the German occupation, and the establishment and eventual downfall of the communist regime in 1990. Reconstructed rooms, such as the offices of former leaders, a typical communist-era apartment, and a grocery store, provide a tangible sense of life during that period. BUNK'ART 1 serves as both a memorial and a space for reflection on freedom and democracy. It is located near the Dajti Ekspres cable car, making it easy to combine the two attractions in a single day.
