The Gjergj Kastrioti National Museum, also known as the Skanderbeg Museum, is one of Albania's most important and visited museums. It is housed within the historic Kruja Castle, a strategic citadel that played a crucial role in Albania's defense against the Ottoman Empire. The museum is dedicated to Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, Albania's national hero, who led the resistance against the Ottomans in the 15th century. The museum's architecture, designed by architects Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, is inspired by traditional Albanian stone towers and medieval Romanesque architecture. Opened in 1982, the museum serves as a memorial to Skanderbeg's life and legacy. The exhibits chronicle his life and military feats, showcasing paintings, armor, original weapons and documents from the 15th century. One of the interesting displays is the replica of the hero's famous goat head-topped helmet. Kruja Castle, which houses the museum, was built in the 5th or 6th century. It served as Skanderbeg's headquarters and the center of Albanian resistance against the Ottoman forces. Under Skanderbeg's command, the castle withstood three major sieges by the Ottomans in 1450, 1466 and 1467. The castle's strategic location on a hill provided a natural defensive barrier, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Today, the castle is one of the most visited historical sites in Albania. Besides the Skanderbeg Museum, visitors can explore the Ethnographic Museum, the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque, and the Dollma Tekke, a Bektashi place of worship.
