Discover more about Rodoni Castle ruins

Rodoni Castle, also known as Skanderbeg Castle, sits on the Cape of Rodon, a rocky peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea. This historical site offers a blend of natural beauty and a glimpse into Albania's past. The castle's construction began in 1450, commissioned by Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, after the first Siege of Krujë. Completed around 1452, it served as a strategic military outpost with 400-meter-long walls and corner towers. Skanderbeg intended the castle to provide easy access to the sea, a crucial advantage in times of conflict. In 1466, during the Siege of Krujë, Skanderbeg and his family retreated to Rodoni Castle, using it as a point of departure to Brindisi with many others from Albania. The castle was destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1467. In 1500, the Republic of Venice rebuilt the castle. However, the Adriatic Sea's corrosive action has since claimed some of its walls. Today, visitors can still see the outer walls and a tower. Nearby, lie the ruins of Saint Peter's Church, considered a holy site. The Cape of Rodon itself is a scenic destination. Its rocky shores meet the clear waters of the Adriatic, offering breathtaking views. The area is also home to the Church of St. Anthony, originally built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century, featuring Romanesque-Gothic architecture and restored frescoes.
