Discover more about Saint George's Church

Saint George's Church, or Agios Georgios, stands as a testament to Corfu's diverse history and architectural influences. Constructed in 1840 by the British to serve as an Anglican church for the English soldiers stationed on the island during the period of British rule , the church's design is a deliberate nod to ancient Greece, emulating a Doric temple. Following the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece in 1865, the church transitioned to Greek Orthodox worship. It was inaugurated as an Orthodox church on March 21, 1865, by Athanasios Politis, the Metropolitan of Corfu, and dedicated to Saint George, the protector of the Infantry Corps. The Voulgaris family contributed the old iconostasis from the Saint Spyridon Church, crafted by the Cretan hagiographer Emmanuel Janne. The church suffered significant damage during the German bombings of 1943 during World War II, necessitating a major restoration. Today, Saint George's Church maintains its unique architectural style, setting it apart from other Orthodox churches in Greece. Its prominent location within the Old Fortress and its historical significance make it a must-see attraction for visitors exploring Corfu Town. The church can accommodate 4,000 worshipers. While the church is open to visitors, it only holds one service a year to celebrate the memory of St. George.
