Discover more about Kampana Fort

Kampana Fort stands within the imposing Old Fortress of Corfu Town, a testament to the island's layered history and strategic importance. Originally part of the Byzantine fortifications, the fort was significantly enhanced during the Venetian rule from the 14th to the late 18th century. The Venetians, recognizing Corfu's crucial position at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, transformed the Old Fortress into a formidable defense against Ottoman sieges. The fort's most recognizable feature is its red clock tower, which stands atop the ruins. As you explore the plateau, you'll encounter remnants of a prison dating back to 1786 and a display of Venetian cannons from the 18th century. The Old Fortress itself is surrounded by the Contrafossa, a sea channel that the Venetians created to separate the promontory from the rest of Corfu Town, effectively turning it into an artificial island. Visitors can access the Old Fortress via a bridge that crosses the Contrafossa. Within the fortress, you can also find the Church of St. George, built by the British in the 19th century, as well as the Public Library and a museum housing a collection of Byzantine sculptures and icons. The fortress also hosts musical events and art exhibitions. Climbing to the top of the fortress offers rewarding panoramic views of Corfu Town and the surrounding Ionian Sea.
