Ura e Gurrës: A Stone Bridge with a Story

Ura e Gurrës, also known as the Bridge of Gurrës, is a charming historical site near Polis, Albania. This stone bridge, with its single arch, spans a mountain stream, blending seamlessly into the rugged landscape. Built in the early 19th century, the bridge was commissioned by Jashar Kadiu from Gurra e Madhe to connect the Gurra area with the Komsa market. The bridge is constructed from white limestone, with regularly shaped stones forming its structure. The arch is reinforced with iron plates, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. Measuring 10.5 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width, with an arch thickness of 0.8 meters, the bridge stands 9 meters above the water. The opening between its supports is 6 meters wide. Ura e Gurrës isn't just a physical structure; it's a piece of local history. It evokes a sense of connection to the past, offering a glimpse into the trade routes and community life of the 19th century. The bridge is located near the ruins of a medieval church named after Saint Friday. The name Gurre means water-spring, which shows that Gurra is very rich in water resources that flow down from the Skenderbeu Mountain.
