Discover more about Byllis Archaeological Park

Byllis Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the fascinating remnants of a once-thriving Illyrian city. Located near Hekal in the Mallakastra region of Albania, Byllis was founded in the 4th century BC and served as an important center throughout the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras. According to legend, Byllis was established by Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles. The city was the largest in Southern Illyria and the center of the Bylline community. Spanning 30 hectares, the park features impressive ruins, including the remains of the original city walls that stretched 2250 meters. Visitors can explore the partially restored theater, which once seated approximately 7,500 spectators, offering a glimpse into the city's vibrant cultural life. The site also contains the foundations of several basilicas, some with lavishly decorated mosaics from the Byzantine period, reflecting Byllis's significance as a religious center. Strategically positioned on a steep hill, Byllis offers stunning panoramic views of the Vjosa River valley and surrounding mountains. The city had six gateways that connected it to other important centers such as Apollonia, Epirus, and Macedonia. After being sacked by invaders in 586 AD, Byllis was abandoned, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological treasures. Today, Byllis Archaeological Park stands as a testament to Albania's rich cultural heritage, providing a unique opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
