Buna Bridge, Lezhë Travel Guide

The Buna Bridge, gracefully arching over the Buna River near Shkodër, stands as a testament to Albania's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1889 during the Ottoman era, the bridge was commissioned by Qazim Pasha, the Governor of Shkodër, and Mayor Bektash Kazazi, with design by Turkish engineer Ali Bey. Its construction marked a significant advancement, employing cement legs connected to iron beams, showcasing the evolving technology of the time.For decades, the narrow Buna Bridge served as the primary access point to Albanian territories west of Shkodër, facilitating trade and connection. The bridge also featured a manual mechanism that allowed it to open for passing ships. Today, the old bridge is a cultural monument of the second category since 2010.With the construction of a new bridge in 2011, the Old Buna Bridge was preserved for pedestrian use, becoming an integral part of a park. Visitors can stroll or cycle across it, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the river, nearby villages, and the majestic Rozafa Castle in the distance. The bridge provides a tranquil escape and a connection to Shkodër's cultural identity.
