    Discover more about Checkpoint

Checkpoint, also known as Postbllok, stands as a stark memorial to Albania's communist past, located on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit in the heart of Tirana. This installation commemorates the political prisoners and the isolation experienced under the communist regime. Created by writer Fatos Lubonja and artist Ardian Isufi, Checkpoint is composed of three significant elements. One element is a concrete bunker, one of the many that were built during the communist era. These bunkers, numbering around 700,000, symbolize the pervasive fear and militarization of Albanian society during that time. Another element consists of concrete supports from the Spaç labor camp, a notorious site where political prisoners were forced into hard labor between 1968 and 1990. These pillars serve as a reminder of the suffering endured by those who resisted the regime. Completing the memorial is a section of the Berlin Wall, a symbol of division that resonates with Albania's own experience of isolation.Today, Checkpoint serves as a place for reflection on Albania's past and honors the resilience of its people. Visitors can explore the site, absorb the atmosphere, and contemplate the exhibits. The surrounding area is a vibrant hub, filled with cafes and shops where one can enjoy traditional Albanian treats and find unique souvenirs.
