Tirana Castle, or Kalaja e Tiranës, also known as the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. The castle's history stretches back to before 1300, with remnants from the Byzantine era. It is believed that the castle was part of the defenses constructed or reconstructed by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD.Strategically positioned where the main east-west and north-south roads once crossed, the fortress formed the heart of Tirana. Today, the most visible remains are the 6-meter high Ottoman-era walls, built by Ahmet Pashë Bargjini in the 18th century on the ruins of the old castle. In 1798, the Toptani family from Kruja took ownership of the castle.Today, the castle has been transformed into a tourist attraction with restaurants, hotels, cultural institutions and a traditional bazaar offering handicrafts and local cuisine. The uncovered wall foundations have been incorporated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street.
