Discover more about Rozafa Castle

Perched on a rocky hill, 130 meters above sea level, Rozafa Castle is a testament to Albania's rich history and enduring legends. The castle's origins trace back to the Illyrians, who constructed the first fortification on this strategic site. Over the centuries, it has been controlled by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans, each leaving their mark on its structure and history. The castle is renowned for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice and devotion. According to folklore, to prevent the castle walls from collapsing, Rozafa, the wife of one of the builders, was walled into the structure. She agreed, requesting that she be left with her right breast, eye, hand, and foot free to care for her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance commemorates this legend. Inside the castle, visitors can explore the remnants of various civilizations, including a Venetian governor's house, now a museum, and the ruins of a church that was transformed into a mosque by the Ottomans. The castle offers three courtyards, divided by interior walls, defense towers, and outer walls with entry points that frame stunning views. The Rozafa Castle Museum displays archaeological objects, vessels, and ceramic fragments dating back to the Early Bronze Age. Rozafa Castle has been the site of numerous sieges, most notably the Turkish siege of 1478-1479, where a small group of Albanian and Venetian defenders resisted overwhelming odds. The castle remained under Ottoman control until 1913 when it was taken by the Balkan League. Today, Rozafa Castle is open to visitors year-round, offering a blend of history, myth, and natural beauty.
