Lake Shkodër Park: A Balkan Gem

Lake Shkodër Park, also known as Lake Scutari or Lake Shkodra, is a natural treasure shared by Albania and Montenegro. As the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, it stands as one of Europe's most significant freshwater ecosystems, teeming with life and offering breathtaking scenery. The lake is surrounded by mountains, creating a dramatic backdrop for its diverse habitats. The Albanian side of Lake Shkodër, while less developed than its Montenegrin counterpart, offers a unique charm. The eastern and northern shores are characterized by flat, swampy terrains, while the southern section features the villages of Shirokë and Zogaj, which have evolved into attractive resorts with accommodations and restaurants serving fresh fish. Shirokë, in particular, has become a popular destination for day trips from Shkodër, boasting a renovated center and a new promenade. Birdwatchers will find themselves in paradise, as the lake is home to around 270 bird species, making it one of Europe's major bird sanctuaries. The lake's clear waters are fed by approximately fifty springs, and it is home to seven endemic fish species, including the local carp, a regional delicacy.
