    Discover more about Skanderbeg Square

Skanderbeg Square stands as the symbolic nerve center of Tirana, reflecting Albania's complex history. The square has undergone numerous transformations since its establishment in 1917 when the Austrians constructed a public space on the site. After Tirana became the capital in 1920, the square evolved through various city plans. During the monarchy (1928-1939), it featured a roundabout with a fountain. Under Italian occupation in 1939, the square was redesigned in a Neo-Renaissance style. The communist era brought new structures like the National History Museum and the Palace of Culture. After the fall of communism in 1991, the statue of Enver Hoxha was removed, and in June 2017, a major renovation transformed the square into one of the largest pedestrian zones in the Balkans. Today, Skanderbeg Square is a 40,000 square meter space that acts as a gathering place for locals and visitors. The Skanderbeg Monument, an equestrian statue of the national hero, dominates the square. The square also features gardens with plants from all over Albania and stone paving from abandoned quarries, symbolizing national unity. It hosts various events, from morning prayers to evening concerts, and is surrounded by key landmarks such as the National History Museum, Et'hem Bey Mosque, and the Clock Tower.
