Discover more about Castle of Kruja

Kruja Castle, rising 608 meters above sea level, stands as a powerful reminder of Albania's history and its people's unwavering spirit of defiance. Originally built in the 5th or 6th century, the castle gained prominence in the 15th century under the leadership of Skanderbeg, who transformed it into the center of resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Skanderbeg, initially educated as an Ottoman hostage, seized the castle using a forged letter and successfully defended it against three major Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466 and 1467. His military prowess and the castle's strategic location made it an impenetrable stronghold, preventing the Ottoman forces from advancing further into Western Europe. Today, visitors can explore the castle grounds, which include the Skanderbeg Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque, and the Dollma Tekke, a Bektashi place of worship. The Skanderbeg Museum showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing his life and battles. The Ethnographic Museum offers insights into traditional Albanian life and culture. The castle also offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley, Tirana, and the Adriatic Sea. The Old Bazaar, located on the road leading up to the castle, is a vibrant market where visitors can find souvenirs, handicrafts, and antiques.
