Gorica Bridge: A Timeless Arched Connection

The Gorica Bridge, also known as Ura e Goricës, is a prominent landmark in Berat, a city recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique architectural character. This elegant bridge connects the Gorica neighborhood to the rest of the city, offering stunning views of Berat's characteristic white houses and the Osum River.Originally constructed from wood in 1780 during the Ottoman era, the bridge was rebuilt with stone in the 1920s. The seven-arched structure stretches 129 meters in length and 5.3 meters in width, rising approximately 10 meters above the average water level. Its arches, ranging from 9 to 16.7 meters, contribute to the bridge's elegant appearance, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.Local legend tells a mystical tale of a girl once being imprisoned within a cavity in the bridge's original wooden structure as a sacrifice to appease the spirits and ensure the bridge's safety.
