Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or the Fortress of Justinian, is a significant historical site located in the center of Tirana. Its history stretches back to before 1300, with evidence of Byzantine-era origins. It is believed that the castle may have been one of the defensive structures built or rebuilt during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD. The castle's location was strategic, situated at the crossroads of the main east-west and north-south roads, making it the heart of Tirana. While not much of the original structure remains above ground, the existing 6-meter high Ottoman-era walls offer a glimpse into the past. These walls have been integrated into the pedestrianized Murat Toptani Street, which features cafes and shops. The Toptani family, who gained ownership of the castle in 1798, has played a significant role in its restoration and transformation into a tourist attraction.Today, Tirana Castle is a vibrant hub where visitors can explore a mix of historical elements and modern amenities. Inside the castle walls, you'll find restaurants serving traditional cuisine, hotels, cultural institutions, and a traditional bazaar where you can purchase local handicrafts. The site is open to the public and represents a blend of the city's past and present.
