National Park Galicica: Where Lakes Meet Mountains
Explore North Macedonia's Galicica National Park: Breathtaking views, diverse trails, and rich biodiversity between two stunning lakes.
Galicica National Park, established in 1958, spans a mountainous terrain between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa in North Macedonia. The park's diverse ecosystems range from lush forests to alpine meadows, harboring over 1,200 plant species, many of which are endemic. Wildlife enthusiasts may spot eagles, deer, and the elusive Balkan lynx. The park's karst landscape features deep gorges and caves. The elevation ranges from 695 meters at Lake Ohrid's shore to 2,254 meters at Magaro Peak, the park's highest point. Hiking to the summit of Magaro Peak provides rewarding views of both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. Several marked trails cater to different skill levels. One popular hike is the Galicica Circular Trail, a moderate 12 km loop. The new adventure hiking product Lake View Trail includes four trails with a total length of 49.5 kilometers that are placed on the southern and central part of the mountain. Galicica is also a unique environment with well-preserved natural flora in several ecosystems. The park encompasses numerous archaeological finds, such as ancient churches and settlements, showcasing its historical significance. The most visited destination in the Park is the recreational-tourist complex at the monastery St. Naum.
