Plaoshnik Archaeological Park: Echoes of Ohrid's Christian Past

Plaoshnik Archaeological Park, situated on a flattened plateau in Ohrid, North Macedonia, is a captivating site steeped in history and cultural significance. Located a short distance from Samuil's Fortress and the Church of St. John at Kaneo, Plaoshnik offers visitors a journey through layers of history, from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Once the location of an early Christian basilica, Plaoshnik is considered one of the most important Christian centers in the Balkans. The site features the remains of several early Christian basilicas and the Church of St. Panteleimon, originally built in the 9th century by St. Clement of Ohrid. St. Clement, a prominent figure in Slavic history, founded the Ohrid Literary School here, which became a leading center for Slavic literacy and culture. Over the centuries, the church was renovated and upgraded. However, during the Ottoman rule, it was transformed into the Imaret Mosque. In 2000, the remains of the mosque were removed to reveal the original Christian structures. Archaeological excavations at Plaoshnik have unearthed significant discoveries, including a baptistery with mosaic floors dating back to the 4th to 6th centuries and thousands of Venetian coins. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed Church of St. Panteleimon, admire the ancient frescoes, and wander through the ruins while enjoying panoramic views of Lake Ohrid. Plaoshnik provides an immersive experience, blending historical exploration with the serene beauty of its surroundings.
