Discover more about Church of Saints Clement & Panteleimon

The Church of Saints Clement & Panteleimon is more than just a religious site; it's a journey through time. Originally built in the 9th century by St. Clement of Ohrid, it served as a center for Slavic literacy and culture. Clement, commissioned by Boris I of Bulgaria, established a monastery and school here, laying the foundation for what is considered the first university in Europe. Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous transformations. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Turks converted it into a mosque, only to later allow its restoration. However, it was eventually ruined again, and the Imaret Mosque was erected in its place. In 2000, the mosque was torn down, and reconstruction of the church began, completed in 2002. Today, visitors can admire the stunning Byzantine architecture, intricate mosaics, and the tomb of St. Clement. Archaeological excavations have revealed remnants of a 5th-century basilica, showcasing the site's continuous religious significance. The church's location on Plaošnik hill offers panoramic views of Lake Ohrid, making it a truly unforgettable experience. The courtyard features remnants of old structures and columns, adding to its archaeological significance. Excavations have also uncovered a collection of Venetian coins, highlighting Ohrid's historical commercial links with Venice.
