Getting There

  • Car

    From Bitola, follow the road leading towards the village of Nižepole. Continue through Nižepole, following signs for Pelister National Park. The road will ascend, offering scenic views. Parking is available near the Hotel Molika, which serves as a starting point for many hikes. Parking fee may apply, typically around 2-3 EUR.

  • Public Transport

    From Bitola, take a bus to Nižepole. From Nižepole, you can either walk (approximately 6km uphill) or take a taxi to the entrance of Pelister National Park and Hotel Molika, the main hub for exploring Baba Mountain. A taxi from Nižepole to Hotel Molika will cost approximately 5-7 EUR.

  • Walking

    From Bitola, an adventurous trekker can hike towards the mountain. Follow the road towards Nižepole, and then continue towards the park entrance. Be prepared for a significant uphill walk of approximately 15km with an elevation gain. Ensure you have adequate water and supplies. Once at the park entrance, follow marked trails to explore Baba Mountain.

Baba Mountain, often referred to as Pelister after its highest peak, is a majestic mountain range situated in the southwestern region of North Macedonia. Rising to 2,601 meters (8,533 feet), it is the third highest mountain in the country and a defining feature of Pelister National Park, North Macedonia's oldest national park, established in 1948. Baba Mountain is characterized by its diverse landscape, encompassing lush forests, alpine meadows, and rocky peaks. The mountain is home to the five-needled pine Molika (Pinus peuce), a unique species of tertiary age found on only a few mountains in the Balkan Peninsula. The park is also home to a variety of wildlife, including bears, wolves, deer, wild boars, and several species of eagles. The mountain's geological features, shaped during the Pleistocene epoch, include granite stone rivers, glacial cirques, and two stunning glacial lakes known as Pelister's Eyes. These lakes, the Big Lake and the Small Lake, are located at elevations of 2,218 meters and 2,180 meters respectively, offering breathtaking views and a refreshing alpine experience. Baba Mountain is deeply embedded in local tradition and culture, offering panoramic views of the Pelagonia Valley, Lake Prespa, and the city of Bitola.
