Elbasan Castle, known locally as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a captivating fortress located in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century AD, the site was initially a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, a fortification along the Via Egnatia. This important Roman road connected the Adriatic coast to Byzantium, making Elbasan a strategic location. In 1466, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II rebuilt the castle, transforming it into a military garrison. The rebuilt fortress featured 26 equidistant towers and walls 9 meters high. The Ottomans named it Ilbasan, meaning "conquered land". Over the centuries, the castle became a center of Albanian nationalism, preserving Albanian history, culture, and language. Today, Elbasan Castle is open to the public, inviting visitors to explore its historic walls and discover remnants of the past.
