Petrela Castle, located in the village of Petrelë, is a captivating historical site just a short drive from Tirana. The castle's origins trace back to the 6th century AD, during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, although the structure seen today largely dates from the 15th century. Strategically positioned 329 meters (1,079 ft) above sea level, Petrela Castle was an integral part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle. Fires were used to communicate between the castles.The castle has a triangular shape, featuring two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. A restaurant located within the castle offers traditional Albanian cuisine, providing a unique dining experience with a historical backdrop. It's a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and those seeking scenic beauty.During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, the castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance. The castle was used to provide asylum to his only sister from the Ottomans. Public Transport
To reach Petrela Castle via public transportation from Tirana, take a bus from the Southeast Bus Station towards Elbasan and ask to be dropped off in Petrelë. Buses that pass through Petrela can drop you off in the town. The bus fare is approximately 100 ALL. From Petrelë, it's about a 1 km walk uphill to the castle. Follow the signs directing you to Rruga Petreles.
Taxi
For a more direct route, take a taxi from Tirana to Petrela Castle. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes. Negotiate the price beforehand or ensure the meter is running. The taxi fare may vary, but expect to pay around 3000 to 4000 ALL.
Car
If traveling by car from Tirana, head towards the Tirana-Elbasan highway. Continue on this road until you reach the town of Petrelë. Once in Petrelë, look for Rruga Petreles, where you will find the entrance to Petrela Castle. The drive takes approximately 35 minutes from the center. Parking is available near the castle.
