Rozafa Castle: A Sentinel of Shkodër

Perched on a rocky hill, 130 meters above sea level, Rozafa Castle is a major landmark offering panoramic views of Shkodër, Lake Shkodra, and the surrounding Albanian Alps. The castle's strategic position at the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers has made it a site of interest for centuries.Founded by the Illyrians in ancient times, the castle has been rebuilt and occupied by Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Each civilization has left its mark on the castle's architecture and history. The Venetians significantly strengthened the castle, and their influence is still visible in the remaining walls. The Ottomans conquered the castle in 1479 and converted the church into a mosque.The legend of Rozafa is central to the castle's identity. According to the legend, three brothers were unable to complete the castle because the walls collapsed every night. They were told that they needed to bury one of their wives alive in the walls to ensure the castle's stability. Rozafa, the wife of the youngest brother, agreed to the sacrifice, requesting that she be left with her right breast, eye, hand, and foot exposed to care for her infant son. A statue near the entrance commemorates this legend.Inside the castle, visitors can explore the ruins of various buildings, including warehouses, water cisterns, and residential quarters. The Church of St. Stephen, later converted into the Mosque of Sultan Fatih, is one of the best-preserved structures. The castle museum, located in the former Venetian Captain's residence, displays artifacts and exhibits detailing the castle's history. The castle offers views and a glimpse into Albania's rich past.
