Discover more about Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Rozafës, stands as one of Albania's most iconic cultural landmarks. Located approximately 3 kilometers south of Shkodër's city center, the castle is easily accessible and offers a captivating blend of history, legend, and breathtaking views. With foundations tracing back to the ancient Illyrians, who erected a citadel here in the 4th-3rd century BC, the castle has been a silent observer of time, witnessing the rise and fall of Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. Its strategic position at the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers, near Lake Shkodra, made it a coveted prize throughout history. The fortifications visible today are primarily of Venetian origin, reflecting their significant influence. The castle is steeped in the legend of Rozafa, a tale known to every Albanian child. According to folklore, three brothers struggled to build the castle, with the walls collapsing each night. An old man advised them that they needed to immure one of their wives within the walls as a sacrifice. They agreed to wall up the wife who brought them food the next day, but swore not to tell their wives. The two older brothers betrayed the oath and told their wives. Only the youngest brother kept his word, and his wife, Rozafa, was chosen. She accepted her fate, requesting that a part of her body – her breast, her hand, her foot, and her eye – remain free so she could continue to care for her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance immortalizes this legend, symbolizing sacrifice and maternal devotion. Inside the castle, visitors can explore three courtyards, divided by interior walls, and discover remnants of various civilizations. The best-preserved structure is the Church of St. Stephen, which was transformed into the Mosque of Sultan Mehmet Fatih during the Ottoman era. The castle also houses a museum in the former Venetian Captain's residence, showcasing artifacts and exhibits detailing the castle's history. From the castle's towers and walls, panoramic views unfold, encompassing Lake Shkodra, the rivers, and the city.
