Discover more about Rodoni Castle ruins

Rodoni Castle, or Kalaja e Rodonit, is perched on the Cape of Rodon, a rocky peninsula extending into the Adriatic Sea. This historical site was strategically chosen by Skanderbeg in 1450, after the First Siege of Krujë, to fortify the Albanian coast against the Ottoman Empire. Construction was completed around 1452, featuring 400-meter-long walls and corner towers. Skanderbeg used the castle as a retreat during the Siege of Krujë in 1466, from where he and his family sailed to Brindisi. The castle was destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1467 but rebuilt by the Republic of Venice in 1500. However, it was never used again after the Ottomans took Durrës that same year. Over time, the Adriatic's corrosive waves have submerged parts of the castle walls. Visitors can explore the remaining outer walls and a tower, while also enjoying the cape's natural beauty. Nearby, the ruins of Saint Peter's Church add to the historical ambiance. The cape offers hiking trails, beaches, and clear waters, ideal for swimming and relaxation. The area is also known for its untouched nature and views reminiscent of the southern English coast. While visiting, be prepared for some rugged roads and bring appropriate footwear for walking. The site is not always well-maintained, and trash can be an issue. Despite this, the blend of history and coastal scenery makes Rodoni Castle a unique destination on the Albanian Riviera.
