Discover more about Saint George's Church

Saint George's Church, or Agios Georgios, is a captivating historical landmark nestled within Corfu's Old Fortress. Constructed in 1840, this church was initially designed by English military architect Anthony Emmett in the style of a Doric temple. Its primary purpose was to cater to the religious needs of British soldiers stationed on Corfu during the period of English Protection (1814-1864). The church's architecture is a striking example of the Georgian neoclassical style. The façade features six Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment, reminiscent of ancient Greek temples. This design reflects the British influence during that era. The interior, originally a three-aisled basilica with a gallery, underwent alterations due to damage sustained during World War II bombings and now features a single-aisled layout. Following the unification of the Ionian Islands with Greece in 1864, Saint George's transitioned from an Anglican church to a Greek Orthodox one. The Voulgaris family, a prominent Corfiot family, donated the stone iconostasis from the Church of Saint Spyridon, adorned with icons by the renowned 17th-century Cretan painter Emmanuel Tzanes. The church is dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of the Infantry Corps. Today, Saint George's Church holds religious services twice a year and occasionally hosts concerts and exhibitions. Its location within the Old Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes it a must-see for visitors exploring Corfu's rich history and architectural heritage. The church is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, providing ample opportunity for exploration.
