This ancient city, nestled on a wooded peninsula between Lake Butrint and the Ionian Sea, boasts a rich history spanning thousands of years, with influences from Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian civilizations. Founded as early as the 8th century BC by Greeks from the Epirus region, Butrint, originally known as Buthrotum, thrived as a fortified town. According to legend, the city was established by exiles fleeing the fall of Troy. Over the centuries, Butrint evolved, becoming a Roman colony in 44 BC and later an important Christian center during the Byzantine Empire. The city then came under Frankish, Venetian, and Ottoman control before being abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of Butrint, including a remarkably intact Greek theater dating back to the 3rd century BC, a Roman forum, a baptistery with stunning mosaic floors, and a Venetian castle offering panoramic views.
