Halikounas Beach: Corfu's Natural Windsurfing Paradise

Halikounas Beach, situated in the village of Melitiei, is one of Corfu's most impressive beaches, characterized by its vastness and unspoiled environment. The beach stretches for approximately 4.5 km along the southwest coast, forming a narrow strip of golden sand that separates the Ionian Sea from the Korission Lagoon. This unique landscape offers a striking contrast to the island's typically lush greenery, with dunes and a dry landscape creating a sense of wild beauty. The beach is part of a protected Natura 2000 area and serves as a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles, highlighting its ecological importance. The shallow, crystal-clear waters and consistent winds make Halikounas a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Several water sports centers operate on the beach, offering equipment rentals and lessons. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and birdwatching in the adjacent Korission Lagoon. The lagoon is home to diverse bird species, including flamingos. While Halikounas maintains a relatively untouched character, basic facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, and a few tavernas are available. A portion of the beach is also designated for nudists.
