Rozafa Fortress, locally known as Kalaja e Rozafës, is situated on a rocky hill overlooking the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers, offering a strategic vantage point near Lake Shkodër. This historic site, dating back to the 4th-3rd century BC, was initially erected by the Illyrians, later serving as a stronghold for the Roman and Byzantine empires.The fortress is steeped in legend, most notably the tale of Rozafa, a woman who was allegedly walled into the ramparts as a sacrifice to ensure the castle's stability. According to the legend, Rozafa, the wife of one of three brothers struggling to build the castle, accepted her fate on the condition that openings be left so she could continue to care for her newborn son. This moving story is immortalized by a sculpture near the entrance, symbolizing maternal strength and sacrifice.Throughout its history, Rozafa Castle has witnessed numerous sieges and conquests. The Venetians significantly strengthened the castle in the 15th century to counter Ottoman expansion. Despite enduring long sieges and bombardments, the castle remained a crucial administrative center until 1865. Today, visitors can explore the extensive grounds, discover ruins of various structures, including a church later converted into a mosque, and admire the panoramic views of Lake Shkodra, the rivers, and the Albanian Alps.
