Discover more about Kanionet e Osumit

Osumi Canyon, or Kanioni i Osumit in Albanian, is a breathtaking natural wonder in southern Albania, near the town of Çorovodë. Often referred to as Albania's 'Grand Canyon,' this 26-kilometer-long gorge has been carved by the Osumi River over two to three million years. The canyon boasts dramatic cliffs that soar up to 150 meters in height and narrow in certain sections to just 1.5 meters apart at the riverbed. The geological formations within the canyon have resulted in unique rock structures with imaginative names like the Cathedral, the Eye, and the Demon's Door. The canyon's ecosystem thrives year-round, showcasing Mediterranean vegetation such as heath and briar, alongside a rich collection of flora and fauna. Erosion has sculpted pockmarked cavern walls adorned with small caves. During the spring, melting snow elevates the river's water levels, creating ideal conditions for rafting. The rapids are classified as Class II, making them accessible even to those without prior white-water experience. As summer progresses and water levels recede, visitors can embark on river hiking expeditions, allowing for exploration of the canyon's interior through swimming and trekking. The canyon also holds cultural significance, intertwined with local legends and history. According to one legend, the tears of a woman named Osumi, mourning the death of two brothers who loved her, formed the Osumi River. The nearby town of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its well-preserved Ottoman architecture and is often called the 'City of a Thousand Windows'.
