Discover more about Venetian Castle

The Venetian Castle, also known as the Venetian Acropolis Castle, stands proudly within Butrint National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Albania. Constructed in the 14th century by the Venetians, who sought to control the strategic waterway and protect their interests in the region, the castle's location atop the ancient acropolis provides commanding views of the Vivari Channel, Lake Butrint, and the surrounding landscape. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed a succession of rulers, including the French and the Ottoman Empire, each leaving their mark on its structure and history. Abandoned in 1572 during conflicts with the Ottomans, it was later restored by Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini in the 1930s. Today, the castle houses a small museum displaying statues and artifacts discovered within Butrint National Park, offering visitors a tangible connection to the site's rich past. Visitors can explore the castle's ramparts, climb its towers, and delve into the museum's collection, gaining insights into Butrint's evolution from an ancient Greek and Roman city to a Byzantine center and a Venetian outpost. The views from the top are particularly rewarding, stretching across the park's archaeological sites and natural landscapes.
