Discover more about Porto Palermo

Porto Palermo Castle, or Kalaja e Porto Palermos, is a captivating historical site on the Albanian Riviera, a few kilometers south of Himarë. The castle is located in the bay of Porto Palermo, known for its clear turquoise waters. The fortress dates back to the early 19th century, commissioned by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. He was an Albanian ruler who declared independence for his region from the Ottoman Empire. Some claim that the castle was constructed earlier by the Venetians, and that Ali Pasha rebuilt an earlier fortification. An inscription above the entrance stated that the castle was built in 1804 by French engineers for Ali Pasha. Legend says that the engineers were killed right after its completion. Strategically positioned, the castle has served various purposes throughout history. During World War II, it was occupied by the Italians and used as a prison. Later, during Albania's communist regime, it became a submarine base. Remnants of the submarine tunnel can still be seen today. The castle was declared a cultural monument in 1948. Today, Porto Palermo Castle serves as a museum and historical landmark. Visitors can explore its unique triangular structure, pentagonal watchtowers, and central chamber. The upper terrace provides panoramic views of the Albanian Riviera.
