Preza Castle: A Window to Albania's Past

Preza Castle, located in the village of Prezë, is a captivating historical site that offers visitors a unique blend of history and stunning natural beauty. Situated on a hilltop between the plains of Tirana and Durrës, the castle has been a strategically important landmark since the Middle Ages. It served as a signaling point between Kruja, Petrela, and Durrës castles, facilitating the exchange of visual signals. The castle's origins trace back to the feudal Thopia family, who controlled the region between the Shkumbin and Mat rivers. Construction began in the 14th century and was completed in the early 15th century. During the 15th century, Preza Castle was one of the main strongholds of the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire, led by Skanderbeg. Today, the castle stands as a monument of culture, attracting tourists with its well-preserved walls and towers. The pentagonal-shaped castle features four towers, one at each corner, and a clock tower erected between 1800 and 1850. From the battlements, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains, including the city of Tirana and the distant mountain ranges. Inside the castle, a restaurant offers traditional Albanian cuisine, providing a taste of local culture. The large green courtyard within the walls is an ideal space for picnics and relaxation.
