Discover more about Durrës Amphitheatre

Located in the heart of Durrës, Albania, the Durrës Amphitheatre is a significant historical landmark, offering a captivating glimpse into the region's Roman past. Constructed in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan, this grand structure was designed to host gladiatorial games and public spectacles, accommodating between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators. As the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans, it stands as a testament to the engineering and architectural prowess of the Roman Empire. The amphitheater's history is layered, reflecting the transitions of power and culture in Durrës. By the 4th century AD, as the Roman Empire declined, the structure was repurposed, and a Byzantine chapel was constructed within the arena. This chapel, adorned with stunning mosaics, signifies the shift towards Christianity. Over the centuries, the site was gradually abandoned, buried, and largely forgotten until its rediscovery in 1966 during urban construction work. Today, visitors can explore the amphitheater's ruins, including its underground tunnels, the remains of the Christian chapel, and the well-preserved mosaics. The site provides a unique blend of Roman and Christian history, offering insight into the cultural transitions of the region. Although only part of the amphitheater has been excavated due to modern buildings built on top of the site, the visible sections provide a remarkable experience. The Albanian government is seeking to have the amphitheater recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
