Discover more about The Great Mosque of Durrës

The Great Mosque of Durrës, or Xhamia e Madhe, is more than just a place of worship; it's a symbol of Durrës's layered past and vibrant present. Constructed in 1931 during the reign of King Zog I, it replaced a previous Ottoman-era mosque. The mosque's design, a collaboration between Albanian and Italian architects, aimed to blend Islamic tradition with local Durrës architectural styles. At the time of its inauguration, it was the largest mosque in Albania, signifying the importance of Islam in the region. The mosque's history is intertwined with Albania's tumultuous 20th century. In 1967, during the communist regime of Enver Hoxha, the mosque was shut down and its minaret torn down, a fate shared by many religious buildings across the country. It was then repurposed as a Youth Center. The building suffered further damage in 1979 from an earthquake. However, with the fall of communism, the mosque was reopened in 1993, thanks to the support of the International Islamic Relief Organization. A new minaret was constructed, restoring the mosque's skyline presence. Today, the Great Mosque stands proudly on Iliria Square, also known as Freedom Square, a central gathering place in Durrës. Its architecture, featuring a high central dome and semi-domes, along with its tall minaret, makes it a striking landmark. The mosque is easily accessible to visitors interested in religious architecture and serves as a focal point for the local Muslim community. The surrounding area is bustling with cafes and shops, making it an ideal spot to relax and soak in the city's atmosphere after a visit.
