Discover more about Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana, an architectural landmark with a controversial past, stands as a symbol of Albania's ever-evolving identity. Originally constructed in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, dedicated to the country's long-time communist leader, the pyramid quickly became a subject of public debate following the fall of communism. Designed by Hoxha's daughter, Pranvera Hoxha, and her husband, Klement Kolaneci, along with architects Pirro Vaso and Vladimir Bregu, the structure was once the most expensive individual building ever constructed in Albania. After 1991, the Pyramid shed its communist associations and was repurposed as a conference center, exhibition venue, and even a base for NATO during the Kosovo War. For a time, it served as a nightclub and television studio, before falling into disrepair. The question of whether to demolish the Pyramid sparked intense debate, but ultimately, a majority of citizens opposed its destruction. In 2018, a new chapter began as the Pyramid was transformed into a youth IT center called TUMO Tirana, focusing on technology, computer programming, robotics, and start-ups. The renovation, led by architectural firm MVRDV, added staircases to the sides of the pyramid and glass coverage for natural light. Today, the Pyramid is a dynamic space for learning, innovation, and community engagement, with colorful boxes housing cafes, studios, workshops, and classrooms. Visitors can climb to the top for panoramic city views, explore the unique architecture, and witness Albania's transformation firsthand.
