Discover more about Church of Apostle Paul and Saint Asti

Located in the coastal city of Durrës, the Church of Apostle Paul and Saint Asti is a prominent Orthodox church that serves as a beacon of faith and a testament to Albania's rich religious history. The church is dedicated to the Apostle Paul, who, according to tradition, preached in the area in the first century, and Saint Asti, one of the first bishops of Durrës who was martyred for his faith during the Roman era. The church's architecture is relatively modern, reflecting the resurgence of religious freedom in Albania after decades of state-imposed atheism. The design incorporates traditional Orthodox elements, creating a reverent and welcoming space. Inside, visitors can admire beautiful iconography and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The church plays a central role in the Orthodox community of Durrës, hosting regular services and religious celebrations. It also engages in various community outreach programs. The church was built with the initiative and funds secured by Archbishop Anastasios of Albania, and the cornerstone was placed in November 1994. After five years, in November 1999, the Orthodox Christians of Durrës welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I during his official visit to Albania. The architectural design was created by the Technical Offices of the Archbishopric, and a local building firm carried out the construction. The church stands across from where the St. Spiridon Church and the Metropolitan See were located before being destroyed in 1967.
