Originally built in the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the castle was significantly rebuilt in the 15th century. Its strategic position, 329 meters above sea level, made it an integral part of the signaling and defense network of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the two. During Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottomans, Petrela Castle was commanded by Mamica Kastrioti, Skanderbeg's sister, adding to its historical significance.
