4.7

Byllis Archaeological Park invites visitors to step back in time and explore the fascinating remnants of an ancient city that thrived for centuries. Located near Hekal, in the Fier County of Albania, Byllis was once the largest city in Southern Illyria and a significant center during Roman and Byzantine rule. Founded around 350 BC by the Illyrian community of Bylliones, Byllis evolved into a major settlement with Greek influences. According to legend, the city's origins trace back to Neoptolemus, son of Achilles, dating back to the 11th century BC. The city's strategic location on a hilltop provided control over the Vjosa River valley and surrounding hills. As you explore the 30-hectare park, you'll discover the remains of impressive city walls stretching 2250 meters, enclosing an area of 30 hectares. Within these walls, Byllis boasted a well-organized urban plan, featuring a theater that could seat approximately 7,500 spectators, a stadium, an agora (main square), temples, and residential areas. The theater is the most important monument of the ancient city. During the Roman period, Byllis became a colony under Julius Caesar and later Emperor Augustus, known as Colonia Iulia Augusta. The city also became an important religious center during the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 5th century AD, with several large basilicas constructed, adorned with lavish mosaics. Despite its significance, Byllis was sacked by foreign invaders in 586 AD and subsequently abandoned. Today, visitors can explore the remaining foundations of the city walls, the partially restored amphitheater, and the ruins of basilicas. The site offers stunning views of the Vjosa River valley and surrounding mountains.
