Gorica Bridge: A Timeless Arched Landmark

The Gorica Bridge, also known as Ura e Goricës, is a prominent cultural and architectural monument in the city of Berat, Albania. Spanning the Osum River, this elegant seven-arch stone bridge connects the historic Gorica neighborhood with the Mangalem quarter, offering picturesque views of the city's traditional hillside houses and the imposing Berat Castle. Originally constructed from wood in 1780 during the Ottoman period, under the rule of Ahmet Kurt Pasha, the bridge was rebuilt with stone in the 1920s, giving it the appearance it retains today. Measuring 129.3 meters in length and 5.3 meters in width, it rises approximately 10 meters above the average water level. The bridge's arches, ranging from 9 to 16.7 meters, contribute to its elegant design, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Throughout its history, the Gorica Bridge has been more than just a crossing point; it has served as a vital link for communication and trade. Legend has it that the original wooden bridge contained a cavity where a girl was imprisoned to appease the spirits for the bridge's safety. During a restoration, a sculpture representing a woman's head was found, adding a mystical element to the bridge's story. Today, the Gorica Bridge is a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a chance to explore the traditional heart of Berat and enjoy panoramic views of the old town and the Osum River.
