Discover more about National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions

The National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions (MNATP), also known as Musée National des Arts et Traditions Populaires, is a treasure trove of Algerian culture, nestled within the historic Dar Khedaoudj el Amia palace in the lower Casbah of Algiers. Inaugurated in 1961, the museum's mission is to preserve and promote Algeria's traditional and rural heritage, displaying the artistry and craftsmanship of its people. The museum's home, Dar Khedaoudj el Amia, is a historical landmark in itself. Built around 1570 by Ramdane Pasha, the palace has passed through many notable owners. Legend says that Khedaoudj el Amia, the daughter of Hassan Khaznadji, lost her sight after admiring her beauty in a mirror. After the French conquest in 1830, it served as Algiers' first town hall and even underwent modifications in 1860 to welcome Empress Eugénie de Montijo. The MNATP's collection comprises over 2,000 artifacts, offering visitors an immersive journey into the daily life and aesthetic expressions of Algeria's diverse regions. Highlights include traditional clothing, jewelry, carpets, pottery, and silver-ornamented furniture. Ethnographic artifacts and a photographic archive of over 20,000 images further enrich the experience, providing a vivid glimpse into Algeria's cultural and historical legacy. Visitors can admire intricate carpets, beautifully crafted pottery, traditional clothing, jewelry and silver-ornamented furniture from various regions of Algeria. The museum also hosts workshops and cultural events, providing tourists a unique opportunity to engage with local artists and gain hands-on experience in traditional crafts.
