Discover more about The Great Mosque

Djamaa el Kebir, or the Great Mosque of Algiers, is a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, it is one of the oldest mosques in Algeria and a rare surviving example of Almoravid design. The mosque's architecture influenced religious buildings throughout the al-Aqsa Maghreb region. Located in the heart of the Casbah, near the harbor, the mosque has undergone several transformations over the centuries. The minaret was added in 1332 by the Zayyanid sultan Abu Tashfin I. The mosque suffered damage during the French bombardment of Algiers in the 17th century, leading to the reconstruction of the mihrab and qibla wall. A gallery was added in 1837 during French colonial rule. The prayer hall features 11 naves divided by horseshoe arches and masonry pillars. The mihrab, though reconstructed, is adorned with small spiral columns and stucco relief. The mosque complex also includes a rectangular courtyard enclosed by arcades. Today, Djamaa el Kebir remains a significant religious and historical site, attracting visitors with its blend of architectural styles and its enduring presence in the heart of Algiers.
