The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district, stands as a remarkable example of modern religious architecture. Completed in 1956, it replaced the Cathedral of Saint Philip, which was reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. Consecrated in 1963, it serves as the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Algiers.Commissioned by Bishop Leynaud in 1944, the cathedral's construction was motivated by vows of gratitude to God for protecting Algeria during World War II. The architects, Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur, along with engineer René Sarger, were inspired by the Gospel of John.
