The Sacred Heart Cathedral of Algiers, located in the Sidi M'Hamed district, stands as a remarkable example of modern religious architecture. Completed in 1956, it replaced the Cathedral of Saint Philip, which was reconverted into the Ketchaoua Mosque. Consecrated in 1963, it serves as the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Algiers.Commissioned by Bishop Leynaud in 1944, the cathedral's construction was motivated by vows of gratitude to God for protecting Algeria during World War II. The architects, Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur, along with engineer René Sarger, were inspired by the Gospel of John. The design emphasizes structural form over ornamentation, creating a contemplative atmosphere enhanced by natural light.The cathedral's architecture blends neo-Gothic and Byzantine elements. A central tower rises more than 52 meters above the ground, dominating the structure. The nave measures 52 meters in length and 35 meters in width. Inside, a small organ from the parish of Boufarik greets visitors, while a mosaic dating back to 324 CE from the Roman basilica of Castellum Tingitanum (present-day Chlef) adds historical depth. The altar, carved from Carrara marble, houses relics of African saints. Stained-glass windows cast vibrant light, enhancing the spiritual ambiance.The surrounding gardens offer a peaceful retreat from the city.
