The Martyrs Memorial, known locally as Maqam Echahid, is a striking monument dedicated to the Algerians who lost their lives during the War of Independence against France. Opened on July 5, 1982, the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence, the memorial has become a major landmark and a place of reflection for Algerians and visitors alike.The monument consists of three massive concrete palm leaves that reach towards the sky, representing the north, south, and central regions of Algeria. These palms, standing 92 meters (302 ft) tall, intertwine and shelter the "Eternal Flame," symbolizing remembrance and honor. At the base of each palm leaf stands a statue of a soldier, each representing a different stage of Algeria's fight for independence.Located on the El Hamma plateau, the memorial offers panoramic views of Algiers and the Mediterranean Sea. The surrounding park provides a serene environment for visitors. The site also houses the National Museum of Moudjahid, which showcases the history of Algeria's struggle for independence through documents, personal belongings of martyrs, and other exhibits.
