    Discover more about Lejdar

Lejdar, located in Medroussa, Algeria, is an archaeological site of immense historical significance. It is best known for its 'Jeddars,' unique pyramid-like tombs that date back to between the 4th and 7th centuries AD.These monuments are believed to be the final resting places of Berber royalty. The Jeddars, numbering thirteen in total, are divided into two groups situated on two hills: three on Jabal Lakhdar and ten on Jabal Arawi. These structures provide insight into the Berber kingdoms that ruled the area during a period of great unrest in North Africa, following the collapse of the Roman Empire and the arrival of various invading forces.Constructed from stone, the Jeddars feature square bases topped with angular mounds, with some reaching heights of up to 18 meters. Over the centuries, the Jeddars have been subject to looting and deterioration, and research has been limited. Nevertheless, the site remains a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Algeria and the Berber civilization. Some Jeddars contain internal chambers adorned with Christian symbols, Latin inscriptions, and hunting scenes, indicating a blend of cultural influences during their period of use. Visitors to Lejdar can explore the ancient ruins, appreciate the architectural ingenuity of the Berber people, and enjoy the scenic landscapes surrounding the site. Guided tours are available to provide deeper insights into the history and significance of the Jeddars.
