Discover more about Bab El Kantra Bridge

Bab El Kantra Bridge, an iconic structure in Constantine, Algeria, is more than just a crossing; it's a journey through time. As the city's oldest bridge, it has witnessed centuries of Constantine's transformations, bearing silent testimony to the city's rich history and architectural evolution. Originally built by the Romans, the bridge has been rebuilt and redesigned several times. In 1185, all the Roman bridges were destroyed, except for El Kantra, which was rehabilitated. It faced destruction again in 1304. A significant reconstruction occurred between 1771 and 1792 under Salah Bey, who employed a Balearic builder named Bartolomeo, who used stones from the ancient Roman amphitheater. This version roughly reproduced the original Roman design. The bridge then transitioned to a French iron arch in 1863, and finally to its current reinforced concrete arch form in 1952. Today, Bab El Kantra Bridge offers visitors panoramic views of the Rhumel River gorge, characterized by its dramatic cliffs and verdant landscapes. The bridge is a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers, especially during sunset when the light creates a magical ambiance on the stone structure. Walking across the bridge provides not only a convenient crossing point but also a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity of its construction and the city's layered past.
