Elbey Palace: A Glimpse into Constantine's Ottoman History

Elbey Palace, or Ahmed Bey Palace, stands as a remarkable testament to 19th-century grandeur in Constantine, Algeria. Constructed between 1826 and 1835 under the rule of Ahmed Bey ben Mohamed Chérif, the last Bey of Constantine, the palace is an architectural marvel blending Moorish and Ottoman styles. Ahmed Bey commissioned a Genovese engineer, Chiavino, along with artists Al-Jabari and Al-Khatabi, for its design. The palace comprises three interconnected suites supported by 266 marble columns, featuring three courtyards adorned with two marble fountains. The walls showcase over 2,000 square meters of paintings depicting Ahmed Bey's travels through Alexandria, Tripoli, and Istanbul. Inside, 540 cedar wood doors display detailed inscriptions and engravings, exemplifying the architectural techniques of the era. Visitors can explore beautifully preserved rooms filled with antiques and artifacts, offering a glimpse into the life and times of Ahmed Bey. The palace also provides stunning views of Constantine's picturesque landscape. Originally serving as Ahmed Bey's residence, the palace was briefly enjoyed by him before the French occupation in 1837, after which it became French military headquarters.
