Botanical Garden Hamma: A Verdant Oasis in Algiers

The Botanical Garden Hamma, or Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, is a sprawling 32-hectare oasis in the heart of Algiers. Established in 1832 by French colonial authorities, it was initially intended as a test garden for acclimating plant species from around the world to Algeria's Mediterranean climate. Over time, it evolved into a renowned botanical center, blending French and English landscaping styles.The garden is divided into distinct zones, including a French formal garden with symmetrical designs and a more natural English garden. Visitors can explore diverse plant collections, including exotic and native species, and admire features like the majestic alley of plane trees (dating back to 1845), the alley of giant bamboos, and the alley of giant Ficus.Beyond its botanical aspects, the garden offers shaded paths, ornate fountains, a mini zoo, and a fine arts museum.
