Achir, also known as Ashir, is a medieval city located in the Titteri Mountains, serving as the first capital of the Zirid dynasty. The Zirids ruled under Fatimid suzerainty during the 10th and 11th centuries. Today, the ruins are situated within the Algerian commune of Kef Lakhdar, in the Médéa Province. Founded in 936 AD by Ziri ibn Manad, a leader of the Sanhaja Berber tribe and an ally of the Fatimid Caliphate, Achir was built as a military fortress and administrative center. Strategically positioned approximately 100 km south of Algiers, near Médéa, Achir's mountain location provided natural defenses and controlled key routes across the Maghreb. The city quickly gained importance as a center of power and trade, becoming a focal point of Sanhajian power. Al Bakri noted in the 11th century that Achir was exceptionally strong and difficult to capture, requiring only a small garrison for defense. However, Achir's reign as the Zirid capital was relatively short-lived, as the dynasty later moved its seat of power to other cities. Over the centuries, Achir changed hands several times, suffering devastation and reconstruction. Today, the archaeological site reveals two distinct Zirid settlements: Achir, founded by Ziri, and Benia, built by his son Bologhine. While the city is largely in ruins, its historical significance remains, attracting historians, archaeologists, and tourists interested in Algeria's medieval past. Visitors can explore the remnants of stone walls and fortifications, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and lush greenery.
