Getting There

  • Walking

    From Martyrs' Square (Place des Martyrs), head north into the Casbah. Follow Rue Sidi M'Hamed Ben Aknoun, then turn right onto Rue Bab Azzoun. Continue onto Rue de la Marine, then turn left onto Rue Saadi et Mokhtar Ben Hafidh. The Great Mosque will be on your right. Walking through the Casbah offers a glimpse into its historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere. No costs are associated with walking.

  • Public Transport

    From the city center, take the Algiers Metro to Tafourah-Grande Poste station. From there, walk north towards the Casbah, following the directions as described for walking. Alternatively, take a bus from a central location to a stop near the Casbah; bus fares are typically around DZD 20-50. From the bus stop, walk to the mosque. The metro fare is around DZD 50.

The Great Mosque of Algiers, or Djamaa el Kebir, is a captivating historical and religious site nestled in the heart of Algiers' Casbah. Constructed in 1097 during the Almoravid dynasty, under the reign of Yusuf ibn Tashfin, it is considered one of the oldest mosques in Algeria. The mosque's architecture reflects the Almoravid style, characterized by its simplicity and functionality.Over the centuries, the mosque has undergone several additions and reconstructions. A minaret was added in 1332 by the Zayyanid sultan Abu Tashfin I. The mosque suffered damage during the French bombardment of Algiers in the 17th century, leading to the reconstruction of the mihrab and qibla wall. A gallery was added in 1840 during French colonial rule.The main body of the mosque features a rectangular layout, wider than it is deep. The prayer hall is divided into eleven naves by pillars and horseshoe arches. The reconstructed mihrab is flanked by two small spiral columns and adorned with stucco relief. The mosque's courtyard provides a serene space for contemplation.Today, the Great Mosque of Algiers remains an important symbol of Algerian Islamic heritage and a testament to the city's rich history.
